RICE VILLAGE. This location of the regional chain is a boon to the student-heavy neighborhood and is a reliable, if crowded, go-to any night of the week. Elegant wood paneling distinguishes the spot from more run-of-the-mill college bars, as do spectacular happy hour specials (Monday to Saturday, 2pm-9pm; all day Sunday). While many patrons happily quaff domestics, beer connoisseurs are pleased with around 50 bottled choices and 20 on-tap options. TVs, darts, pool, and a refreshing patio round out the amenities.

MONTROSE. Although largely lesbian-frequented, this complex welcomes all who would like to attend. Four venues include a saloon and martini bar, and you'll find room for everything from live music to karaoke and open-mic events. Outdoor seating lets you take in the temperate weather, and pool tables invite a bit of friendly competition. And lest you think that fun is the club's only intention, Chances also sponsors regular fundraisers for breast cancer and other worthy causes.

THE HEIGHTS. This two-story concert venue has a 25-year history of presenting live music from local and national groups in an intimate setting, up-close and personal. Whether upstairs or in the downstairs lounge, you're guaranteed to hear loud, live rock and see an eclectic mix of locals, students, punks, and perhaps a few who defy categorization. Two full bars and two pool tables help make downtime fun.

RIVER OAKS. Pay attention as you make your way down Peden Street or you stand a good chance of missing this nondescript little joint, whose unmarked blue door in no way anticipates the lounge inside. Marfreless fosters a surprisingly romantic setting that makes it a favorite with lovey-dovey couples looking for a quiet table where they can make small talk, nurse a few glasses of wine, and listen to soft classical music. Subdued lighting and several scattered, cozy couches add to the place's intimate appeal.

MONTROSE. One of the city's oldest bars ­ and a longtime fixture on the gay front ­ Mary's is famous for its casual atmosphere and busy scene. In fact, most anytime you show up, there'll be a strong contingent of folks hanging out and sharing stories. An outdoor patio takes care of overflow traffic, and drag shows are a regular occurrence. You'll also find some video games and a pool table to pass the time. Plus, when the annual Pride parade makes its way through the neighborhood, folks often head to Mary's for the best views (tickets required).
